High School Recruiting Big Business

High School Recruiting Big Business

I remember growing up watching my local high school football team dreaming of the day that I could suit up and run on the field with that uniform on.  Once I made it, it was just what I thought it would be, the greatest experience of my young life.  Coming out of  high school I saw numerous friends and opponents get full ride scholarships to schools ranging from Bowling Green like myself  to Ohio State and Michigan.  Many of us were from single parent homes or just poor families so we appreciated and were thankful for the chance to play football and get a free education.  BIG BUSINESS!!  Once we arrived on our various campus we learned quickly that this was by no means a Free Ride.  We worked from sun up to sun down trying to the best athletes we could be and somehow get a education when we weren’t practicing.  But were we missing the business side of things?  While we were in high school we received letters from every college and university that had paper to print it on.  It made you feel like you were the best player in the county and everybody wanted you.  These coaches and recruiters would come to see you in school and at your home.  Whatever it took to get that good player and help there university win and make more money.  Here it is in a nutshell.  If you are a high school coach and you have a player or are running a solid program that produces Division 1 athletes, you can write your own ticket!  These coaches are getting better jobs at colleges and universities and receiving money under the table to get their top athletes at some schools.  Buy no means is this all coaches or a large percentage of coaches, but it does exist.  Sports is a billion dollars industry, and if you get the next great athlete at the high school level then you the MAN!
